Understanding Mobile Plans
Choosing the right mobile plan can save you hundreds of dollars per year. Here’s what you need to know to make the best decision.
Unlimited vs. Limited Data
Not all unlimited plans are created equal:
- ✓Premium unlimited — no throttling, HD streaming, high hotspot data (typically $70-90/line)
- ✓Standard unlimited — may throttle after 50GB, SD streaming, limited hotspot ($50-70/line)
- ✓Basic unlimited — more throttling, deprioritization during congestion ($35-50/line)
- ✓Limited data plans — pay for what you use, best for light users ($20-40/line)
Major Carriers vs. MVNOs
Understanding your carrier options:
- ✓Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile — largest networks, best coverage, premium pricing, most perks
- ✓MVNOs — use major networks at lower prices (Mint, Visible, Cricket, Metro, Boost)
- ✓Trade-off — MVNOs cost less but may have slower speeds during network congestion
- ✓Coverage — check which network the MVNO uses to ensure it works in your area
Family Plan Savings
Multi-line plans offer significant discounts:
- ✓2 lines — typically save $10-20/line vs. single line pricing
- ✓3-4 lines — maximum per-line savings, often the sweet spot
- ✓5+ lines — additional savings may flatten or decrease
- ✓Mix and match — some carriers let each line choose different plan tiers
What to Look For
Key factors when comparing mobile plans:
- ✓True monthly cost — including taxes, fees, and device payments
- ✓Data limits — throttling thresholds and deprioritization policies
- ✓Hotspot data — how much mobile hotspot is included
- ✓Streaming quality — HD vs. SD video streaming restrictions
- ✓International features — roaming, calling, and texting abroad
- ✓Perks — streaming subscriptions, discounts, and loyalty rewards

Common questions about switching cell phone plans.
Can I keep my phone number when I switch?
Yes! You can transfer (port) your existing number to any new carrier. The process is simple: don’t cancel your old plan first, just sign up with the new carrier and provide your account info. The transfer typically completes within a few hours to 2 days.
What’s the difference between postpaid and prepaid?
Postpaid plans bill you at the end of the month and may require a credit check. Prepaid plans are paid in advance with no credit check. Prepaid is often cheaper but may have less priority on the network during congestion.
Will I have the same coverage with an MVNO?
MVNOs use the same towers as major carriers, so coverage is identical. However, during network congestion, MVNO customers may experience slower speeds as major carrier customers get priority. In most areas, this difference is negligible.
How do I know if my phone is unlocked?
Try inserting a SIM from another carrier — if it works, your phone is unlocked. You can also check in your phone’s settings or contact your current carrier. Phones purchased directly from manufacturers are typically unlocked. Carrier phones can be unlocked after paying them off.
What happens to my phone if I still owe money on it?
You’ll need to continue paying your device payments to your old carrier, or pay it off in full. Some new carriers offer to pay off your old phone (up to a limit) if you trade it in and buy a new device from them.
Is 5G worth the extra cost?
It depends on your location. 5G coverage is still expanding. In major cities, you’ll notice faster speeds. In suburban and rural areas, 4G LTE may still be the primary connection. Most new plans include 5G at no extra cost, so it’s worth having if available.
